Religious solemnisation of the marriage takes place on the wedding
ceremony eve. Known as the Nikah ceremony rite is compulsory by both the
Islamic law and the civic law to legalise a Malay wedding.A Malay wedding
starts with the akad nikah (marriage contract) ceremony.
Prior to the real
solemnisation, the tok kadi will usually give a short talk about the virtues
and blessings of marriage, as well as to remind the bride and groom of their
individual duties and responsibilities, with the many of the reminders going to
the husband.Foremost among the responsibilities of the husband is maintenance ,
security ,and protection, and overall responsibility for the welfare of his
wife. This includes feeding, clothing and shelter for the wife and their
children — a legally enforceable duty, which remains even after divorce. Thus,
financial accountability for the family is the husband’s sole responsibility,
and the wife has no duty to contribute to family everyday expenditure unless
she has the means and the wish to do so. In addition, the husband is also
anticipated to give her wife company and marital relations, and to avoid doing
anything that would harm her.
In this ceremony the groom will signs the marriage contract which
will be provided by Tok Kadi and agrees to provide the bride with a mas kahwin
(mahar, literally 'marriage gold' in form of money or goods or something as
requested by the bride). It is opposite to dowry where the mas khawin is paid
by the bride to the groom.
The mas khawin is a sign to show that the man is willing and are
prepared to build a family with the lady he chose to get married with. The
contract signing is done when the man said ‘ Aku terima nikahnya..” and after
it is done , the ceremony will be accompanied by prayer
After the solemnisation , the bride and groom will meet each other for the ring session where the man will put the wedding ring on her wife's finger and will be followed up by kissing her forehead , to symbolize that the women is her wife. After that , there will be a photography session to capture all the moments.
